Cooling System - Water Pump Leaking/Engine Overheating

CONDITION



One of the following conditions is present:



^ Coolant pump is leaking coolant.



^ Engine overheating without coolant leak.



TECHNICAL BACKGROUND



Replace both parts together during the same repair.



PRODUCTION SOLUTION



Improved coolant pump and thermostat.



SERVICE



Condition: Leaking water pump



1. Replace coolant pump. (Perform Step 3 below.)



2. Check service history. Determine, if thermostat part number 06E 121 111 AD was replaced in previous repair.



^ If not, perform Step 1 below. (Replace thermostat.)



^ If yes, only replace water pump.



Condition: Engine overheating (no water pump leak) - thermostat failure



Follow all steps below.



1. Replace the thermostat (Figure 1). (See Repair Manual >> Mechanics >> Rep. Gr 19 Removing and installing coolant thermostat.)



2. Check to determine whether the cooling pump (Figure 2) has a plastic housing.

3. If the coolant pump housing is plastic, also replace the Coolant pump. (See Repair Manual >> 6-cylinder direct petrol injection engine, mechanics



>> Rep. Gr 19 >> Removing and installing Coolant pump.)



Per the repair manual, collect coolant in a clean container and reuse coolant during repair. Only use new coolant to top off system.
