Brake Pad: Removal and Replacement

Inspect

DANGER:

- Risk of injury, body parts may become jammed or crushed. Risk of injury, skin and eyes may be injured due to brake fluid spraying

out at high pressure when working on the SBC brake system - Deactivate SBC brake system using STAR DIAGNOSIS.

- Risk of poisoning from swallowing brake fluid. Risk of injury from brake fluid coming into contact with skin and eyes.

- Pour brake fluid only into suitable and appropriately marked containers. Wear protective clothing and eye protection when handling

brake fluid.

- Risk of death. Death may result if vehicle slips or topples from the lifting platform.

- Align vehicle between the columns of the hydraulic hoist and position the four support plates below the hoist support points specified

by the vehicle manufacturer.

1    Raise vehicle with lifting platform so that the wheels clear the ground 2    Remove rear wheels.

3    Check lining thickness of brake pads and condition of brake disks. 4    Check fixed caliper (31) for leaks and dust seal for damage

- If the fixed caliper (31) is leaking or the dust seal is damaged then replace rear axle brake caliper

Remove/Install

5 Deactivate SBC brake system using STAR DIAGNOSIS.

CAUTION: See notes on repairs to brake system

6    Unplug right rear brake pad contact sensor (S10/4) at connector (S10/4x1) 7    Drive out retaining pins (41) using a drift and remove pad retaining plate (31d)

NOTE: Installation: Drive in retaining pins (41) as far as the stop using a drift. Ensure that pad retaining plate is correctly seated (31)

8    Pull brake pads (31g) out of fixed caliper (31)

NOTE:

- If the brake pads (31g) are stuck, use the lever. When pressing out the brake pads, insert a wooden or plastic wedge between the lever and

fixed caliper.

- Brake pads (31g) must be disposed of as special waste. Please ask local authorities if it is permitted to dispose of these parts as

household-like industrial refuse.

CAUTION: Installation: Do not use sharp-edged or pointed implements to clean the brake pad guides. Install rear axle brake pads

(31g) with panel dry. The marking on the panel must point in the direction of rotation of the relevant wheel.

NOTE:

- Installation: Only the brake pads (31g) approved by Mercedes-Benz may be installed as a set.

9    Press right rear brake pad contact sensor (S10/4) out of pad backing plate of brake pad (31g)

NOTE: Installation: Defective right rear brake pad contact sensors (S10/4) must be replaced.

CAUTION: See note on installing contact sensor for brake lining wear indicator

10    Press back piston using resetting device

NOTE: Draw off some brake fluid out of the brake fluid reservoir beforehand to prevent the brake fluid reservoir overflowing when pressing back the piston.

CAUTION: See notes on handling brake fluid

NOTE: Secure the opposite pair of pistons with plastic wedges to prevent them from slipping out. Then press back the other pair of pistons using the resetting device.

11    Install in the reverse order

12    Activate SBC brake system using STAR DIAGNOSIS.

13    Use STAR DIAGNOSIS to move brake pads toward brake disks

14    Inspect fluid level in expansion reservoir, adjust to correct level if necessary.
