Bentley Might Build a 'Hardcore' Continental GT Without a Hybrid

Bentley's big coupe might ditch its hybrid system and go rear-wheel drive.

M8 Competition 1000HP Build

Hi Folks,

I wanted to post some info on my 1000HP build, because when I embarked on this journey, I didnt find much info on S63 builds (so hopefully this will answer some questions that some of you have if youre considering pushing the limits a tad bit). Many folks with M8s and M5s seem to do moderate tunes and mods, and the ones that do major builds just go crazy all out for drag times. I just wanted to build a reliable and stable weekend car that was a 9-second car without too much drama. So this is my brief story and a few step-by-step methods I took to achieve this power and the mods I made. Also, several members on the forums messaged me and asked me about the build and dyno numbers, so I put this together to give you all some info, especially about the Pure 900 Turbos and their Spool/Lag (which you can see from Dyno Chart 1 showing the bright blue line when I had the stock engine internals running the stock turbos).

Please be advised, my idea was not to make a 1000+ whp car. I just wanted to make an 850-900 whp car that I could daily drive. I didnt care about drag times or creating a dyno numbers car. I also wanted to be done with the whole build in less than 2 months and not be stuck super complex build that would have my car in a shop for 6 months to an year.

Disclaimer – Any serious mods you make will void your warranty, and if you dont do it right or follow the correct steps or use a competent shop, it will result in your car being screwed up. So I am just warning you.

These were my goals to make my 1000HP 9 Sec Everyday Car:

Step 1 – Reduce 50-100 lbs of weight from the car
Step 2 – Improve Intake, Cooling & Misc Engine Mods
Step 3 – Improve Exhaust Flow
Step 4 – Get the S63 TU4 Engine Fully Built and Install New Turbos
Step 5 – Get ZF Transmission 8HP76 Fully Built to Withstand 1200 WHP and 1200WTRQ
Step 6 – Update Suspension & Tires
Step 7 – Update Brakes
Step 8 – Find a really good tuner or three for BM3 and for Trans Tune and Street Test

Step 1 – Reduce 50-100 lbs from the car

I managed to reduce a total of 80 lbs by eliminating my factory primary and secondary cats, and installing a high-flow cat and replacing some exhaust parts with titanium bits. Being in California and the fact that I didnt want my car to sound like a rice rocket, it was important to have high-flow 200-cell primary cats installed. I hate the raw smell of catless exhausts and the annoying pops and bangs the car makes when you have straight pipes. Plus, your car smells like a gas station when you pull up, and thats just not something I am willing to have on my weekend drive

Step 2 – Improve Intake & Misc Engine Mods

I took out the factory inlet pipes and installed the Dinan pipes. They actually have the largest intake channels and flow more air than any inlet pipe out there. Its just that they have really shitty fitment and you get a lot of annoying error codes with intake leaks. So I created some custom gaskets and did my own smoke tests to make sure no air leaked and got these fitted. I also didnt want to get rid of my stock air box. I felt the stock airbox coupled with a CarBahn high-flow filter and Dinan inlets would flow more or less the same or better air as the Eventuri’s. I also replaced the stock air inlet intake channels behind the front grill (which actually point up) with Ram air units. The Ram air units coupled with the high-flow filters and the Dinan air inlets actually produced 4 more whp and 6 wtq than the Eventuri setup. So I kept this config rather than going with an Eventuri intake.

Then I dumped my coolant overflow reservoir tank that BMW replaced under warranty and installed the RK billet tank. This thing is built like a beast and is a solid component. Even with BMW replacing the original tank with a newer tank, I didnt feel comfortable pushing the car with it. So I went with the billet tank.

Changed spark plugs to new NGKs Part No 97506S8KT gapped at 0.22

Changed OEM ignition coils to upgraded CarBahn units

Changed factory intercoolers to CSF intercoolers

Changed factory oil cooler to CSF oil cooler

Installed CarBahn front-mounted heat exchanger

Step 3 – Improve Exhaust

Removed my factory primary and secondary catalytic converters and straight-piped the secondaries and installed 200-cell heat-shielded primary catalytic converters

Step 4 – Get the Engine Built and Install New Turbos

Took the car to CarBahn and they rebuilt my engine with their Stage 2 package. I opted to keep the compression at stock. Bought a pair of Hybrid Pure 900 turbos from Pure Turbo and installed them

Step 5 – Get ZF Transmission 8HP76 Fully Built to Withstand 1200 WHP & 1200 WTRQ

This part was essential, and I learned a ton along the way about the ZF 8HP76 trannies during the build. I got my whole tranny pulled out and got it rebuilt for Stage 2 with a billet torque converter, and the transfer case fully upgraded as well.

Step 6 – Update Suspension & Tires

Installed CarBahn monoball kit

Installed CarBahn toe link kit

Installed CarBahn high-performance coil-over suspension kit

Dropped the car by 1.2 inches

Front Tires – Michelin Pilot Sport 4S 285/35 ZR 20 (using stock rims) and 10mm spacers

Rear Tires – Michelin Pilot Sport 4S 295/35 ZR 20 (using stock rims) and 10mm spacers

Step 7 – Update Brakes (PENDING)

I was part of the CCB group buy, got the product, looks great but havent had time to install and test them. I am still on my OEM steel rotors and Isweep 2000 pads. I will update later once I have the new brakes installed.

Step 8 – Find a really good tuner or three for BM3 and for Trans Tune and Street Test

Oh boy, I spent a lot of time going through tuners and dealing with map revisions, dyno sessions and over 300 hours of street testing. The lesson I learned was always go with the quiet humble guy who knows their shit and is super thorough and technical. Never fall for these big-name tuners. And dont even think that doing a simple xHP tune will suffice when youre pushing serious power. You need a reliable tranny tuner as well.

Here are my dyno charts taken on two super hot days when ambient air was 91-93F at 102 ft above sea level.

Dyno used was a Mustang dyno with a 18% drivetrain loss for AWD readings.

(1). 100 Octane = With the stock engine internals with BM3 running just the CarBahn front Core and Secondary Cat Delet with 100 Octane I was making 732 WHP and 690WTRQ at Max. [Fuel Pumps and Injectors are Stock]

(2). 100 Octane = With built engine, Pure 900 Turbos, CFS Intercoolers, and 200 Cell Primary Cats I was making 766/758 WHP and 819WTRQ at Max. [Fuel Pumps and Injectors are Stock]
I got some sort of power limiter, Nanny system kicking in at 755-770 WHP here when tuning, that’s why I was getting capped with 100 octane at 766WHP. I think I know what’s going on here and will work on this in August. It was never a big deal since I mostly run E40 and only switch to 100 octane in winter to avoid moisture with cold weather and Ethanol.

(3). E40 = With built engine, Pure 900 Turbos, CFS Intercoolers, and 200 Cell Primary Cats I was making 850 WHP and 787WTRQ at Max. [Fuel Pumps and Injectors are Stock]

*** The Dyno Fan failed on this day and the car was super heat soaked after 12 runs of dyno in getting this map perfected. Ideally with a fully working dyno Fan and a not So Heat soaked car the numbers should be close to 890WHP and 840WTRQ.

I am going to go back to the dyno one of these days and get updated numbers after a few more tweaks. Another reason I am stopping at these 850-890 WHP numbers is to avoid my stock Injectors and pumps from overloading. At a later date if I get bored and feel like pushing the car a bit more I will be updating my injectors, but for now I am very happy with the way the car drives. I have put a total of 1500 miles on the mods and the car is super reliable and is a real beast. I achieved what I wanted which was 1000HP on the crank, and 850WHP x 18% correction on the mustang dyno – 1003 HP on a 92-93 degree day with a broken Dyno fan. On a cool day this is probably 1100HP.

Total build time 5 weeks, and a special thanks to the CarBahn San Jose guys who were just super awesome.

I have not dragged this yet and my best street 1/4 was 9.81 at 147MPH, with a 0-60 in 2.66 being my best. I feel like theres more wiggle room to improve. The top end on this car is insane, and it pulls like a freight train with afterburners.

So this is plenty good for me, and plenty fast for now

Hope this info helps you all.

Cheers.

From Street to Track: My First BMW Performance Drive at Thermal, CA

Hey everyone,

Got my G82 recently and I have been driving like grandma while breaking in my car (almost there 922 miles). About a month ago, I got an email that I got a complimentary Track Day (2 hours) at the BMW Performance Driving School in Thermal, CA. I had no idea what to expect and I was hoping it would be fun… Below is my review and experience for anyone who hasnt done it.

My day started at 3am! Had to get up early to beat LA traffic. Still with no traffic its a two-hour drive from South Orange County, California to Thermal, CA. After I got ready and consumed 20 gallons of coffee, I hit the road (about 4am). Arrived at the Performance Center by 6am. As I was parking, I thought to myself, no ones going to be here. What am I going to do for an hour? Also why is this starting at 6:45am??? Well, it gets really hot in Thermal, CA like 100 plus degrees – so starting early is a must to beat the heat. To my surprise, the building was open! I was greeted with friendly staff. They had coffee, pastries, snack, Water bottles (see pic below hehe) and other goodies. Place looked really nice and shiny. I took some wild pics (see below).

A little after 7am the instructor came in and had us sit in a classroom. He like the other instructors are retired race car drivers, which is cool. We reviewed basic safety protocols, blah blah blah. Our session was basically broken down into two: First part off road x5 drive and then driving on a track.

First part was cool. Seeing what the X5 can do. There were times where I thought, ok this is getting sketchy, but the car held its own (see pics below). This was fun but short, low adrenalin.

Second part was AWESOME! There are 5 cars lined up on the track. There are basically enough cars for everyone to ride at the same time. There is no passing. Instructor shows you the course (small course/track). What was really funny was when the instructor came up to us and said, "there is no speed limit". LOL! So when I got in the car I let it RIP. Exactly how I play in Gran Turismo. I pushed it to the max. I thought I was Charles Leclerc. Taking the turns properly, down shifting. It was so cool. We got to drive 5 cars: i4, M8 Competition, Z4 M package I think, X5 M competition and X6 M competition. You basically get to have 3 laps, then switch with your partner, 3 more laps and then rotate to the next car. I got to drive all the cars except the X6. M8 can RIP! I was impressed. The Z4 handling was excellent. Really enjoyed it.

BONUS: The last part of the session is the instructor taking you for a drive in a G80. LOL. I am laughing because I have never felt speed like this before. Remember that I have not floored my car yet. This guy was pedal to the metal, drifting and then slamming the breaks. It reminded me of all the posts from everyone here saying, just DRIVE THE CAR. Its built to be driven. Crazier than a roller coaster.

Anyways this experience had a profound impact on me. I would like to track my car someday. Hope anyone who has any doubts about the performance school, considers doing this. Well worth it…

G87 M2 CS Part Numbers Begin Appearing

Some of the G87 M2 CS parts are now showing up, but it appears only the parts that are derived from its big brothers (M3/M4) are currently listed. Unfortunately G87 specific parts like the front splitter, grille, trunk lid, rear diffuser, etc. still arent in the system yet. That may take a few more weeks/months before they are.

Looked up a few of the most common parts that people have asked about.

The G87 M2 CS uses the same front struts that are fitted to the M4 3.0 CSL/M4 CSL. The rear shocks are from the M4.

X3 M50 vs. Macan GTS vs. AMG GLC43 – Drag Race

Quote:

It’s time for a three-way German SUV drag race!

We’ve got our hands on the BMW X3 M50, the Porsche Macan GTS, and the Mercedes-AMG GLC43, and we’re about to see which is quickest over the quarter-mile! So let’s take a closer look at the stats…

Starting with the X3 M50, it’s powered by a 3-litre turbocharged straight-six, and this creates 398hp and 580Nm. Power is sent to all four wheels via an 8-speed automatic gearbox, and it weighs in at 1,980kg. As new, one of these costs around £71,000.

Alongside it we have the Porsche Macan GTS. This houses a 2.9-litre twin-turbo V6 under the bonnet, and this produces 440hp and 550Nm – more power than any other car here! This is sent to all four wheels via a 7-speed auto, and it tips the scales at 1,960kg. New, it costs around £75,000.

Then, finally, we have the Mercedes-AMG GLC 43. Under the bonnet, you’ll find a 2-litre 4-cylinder turbocharged engine, and this creates 421hp and 500Nm. It’s equipped with a 9-speed automatic gearbox, which sends power to all four wheels, and it weighs in at 1,995kg. As new, it’s the most expensive car here, costing around £78,700.

So the Porsche has the most power, and it’s the lightest car here… So surely it’ll be a walkover, right?! There’s only one way to find out for sure… LET’S RACE!

Munich. The new BMW iX3 demonstrates the BMW Groups take on implementing a holistic approach to product sustainability across the entire life cycle. During product development, extensive measures were implemented throughout the supply chain, production and use phases, explicitly focused on conserving resources and reducing the model’s environmental footprint. As such, the Neue Klasse marks an important milestone toward achieving the companys 2030 and 2050 CO₂e targets.

CO₂e benefits achievable after only one year of use

The extensive decarbonization measures in the supply chain results in an early break-even point: when charged with electricity from the European energy mix, the CO₂e footprint of the new BMW iX3 50 xDrive is lower than that of a comparable model with a combustion engine after about 21,500 kilometers (WLTP combined). When charged exclusively with electricity from renewable sources, the BMW iX3 50 xDrive beats the comparable ICE model after only 17,500 kilometers (WLTP combined), allowing customers to potentially achieve CO₂e benefits in as little as one year.

Decarbonization in the supply chain

The key levers to reduce CO₂e emissions in the supply chain are the use of secondary materials and renewable energy, alongside product and process innovations. This combination of measures has led to a decrease of CO₂e emissions in the supply chain of 35% during product development.
The Gen6 battery cells of the BMW iX3 high-voltage storage system are made of 50% secondary cobalt, lithium, and nickel materials. In addition, renewable energies are harnessed in the anode and cathode materials and cell production. This is how CO₂e emissions per watt hour were reduced by 42% compared to the Gen5 cell of the previous model.

The BMW Group is increasingly focused on the use of innovative and secondary materials in other components as well. For instance, 30% of the secondary raw material used for the engine compartment cover and the storage compartment under the front hatch is recycled maritime plastic. This post-consumer material consists of old fishing nets and ropes, preventing these materials from potentially being dumped in the ocean.
Secondary aluminum accounts for 80% of the wheel carriers and swivel bearings as well as 70% of the cast aluminum wheels.

‘Design for Circularity’: consistent implementation in the Neue Klasse

The BMW Group applied the ‘Design for Circularity’ approach consistently in developing the BMW iX3. The approach builds on the concepts of secondary first (the prioritized use of secondary materials), strategic material selection and disassembly optimization. As a result, secondary materials account for one third of all material used in the new BMW iX3 50 xDrive.
One example of implementing these three concepts is the Econeer seat cover, available in the interior trim Essential, whose fabric, adhesive and fleece are all made from PET. This mono-material choice increases recyclability. Moreover, the textile yarn used consists entirely of recycled PET as well.
Other components whose development followed the ‘Design for Circularity’ approach include the center console, instrument panel and interior floor trim.

Significantly improved efficiency in the use phase

BMW EfficientDynamics involves consistently identifying and harnessing efficiency potential in all vehicle subsystems. Applying this approach, the energy consumption of the new BMW iX3 is 20% lower than in the predecessor model (WLTP combined).

This significant improvement is primarily based on optimized aerodynamic properties, reduced rolling resistance and on-board power consumption as well as the drive’s unparalleled combination of efficiency and dynamics.

Sustainability-centric production at BMW Group’s Debrecen plant

Designed and built according to the BMW iFactory principles, the new BMW Group plant in Debrecen, Hungary, is fully focused on efficiency, digitalization and sustainability. It is the first BMW Group car factory that is operated and produces vehicles without using fossil fuels, such as oil and gas, under normal operating conditions.

The only energy source to power operations at the site is electricity. According to current planning, up to 25% of the plants annual electricity needs can be covered by the photovoltaic system located on the premises. The remaining electricity is obtained from other renewable energy sources. Surplus solar energy is stored in a heat storage unit and used to heat the paint shop ovens as needed.

Only 0.1 tons of CO₂e are emitted in the production of a BMW iX3 car, about two third below production at other BMW Group plants.

The BMW Group’s sustainability targets

The BMW Groups commitment to the Paris Climate Agreement and to achieving Net Zero by 2050 or earlier is an integral part of the comprehensive 360° sustainability approach incorporated in the corporate strategy. The company is pursuing ambitious, scientifically derived CO₂e targets for the coming years. For instance, the BMW Group intends to reduce its CO₂e emissions by at least 40 million tons in 2030 (baseline: 2019).

Publicly accessible, TÜV-verified Product Carbon Footprint

For years, the BMW Group has released its vehicle footprint, which includes a greenhouse gas report for its vehicles verified by Germany’s TÜV Technical Inspection Association. The report for the new BMW iX3 50 xDRIVE can be downloaded here and is also available in the My BMW app. It offers increased transparency regarding raw materials used and CO₂e emissions over the entire vehicle lifecycle.
